I hate driving.
Not because I hate to drive. I hate to have to deal with other people.
Because of such I dedicate the following to all people who drive in the tri-county area.
*please forgive my grammar, just tried to remember from when I heard him live*
Jeff Daniels - Have a Good Life
The light turn green, I pulled ahead
You crossed the street I almost killed you dead
Thank God I quickly hit the brakes
I saved your life for heaven's sakes
Though any court of law would say,
I was not only right, I had the right-of-way
You turned my sunshine into rain
When you lost your mind and went insane
Cause through my windshield I could tell
You must have family in the depths of hell
Your eyes were wild, your teeth were bared
Anatomical references filled the air
And when you flipped me off
You brought a hardness to my world of soft
There's nothing I can say or do
To make this wrong all right with you
*Chorus*
So have a good life, then die
I hope it hurts so much it makes you cry
I hope it's torturous and slow,
I hope you know your gonna go
Have a good life, then die
And when you tore the hood ornament off my car
I'd never seen an object thrown so far
When you tried to open up my door
"That's what power locks are for"
And when you took off your shoe and tried to break my window
The crowd that gathered sure enjoyed the show
I'll admit I felt some fear
When you tried to remove my side-view mirror
And when you took that trash can and started to cover my car with garbage
You set a new standard in the annals of pedestrian carnage
I'd love to stay until your done
How I hate to almost hit-and-run
*Chorus*
So have a good life, then die
I hope it hurts so much it makes you cry
I hope it's torturous and slow,
I hope you know your gonna go
Have a good life, then die
And just for the record, I'm not an asshole
And yes I'd touch me with a ten-foot-pole
And I have more than shit for brains
And no I don't think I'm insane.
And yes I do know how to drive
And no your not lucky to be alive
Cause next time I see you walkin' round.
I'm gonna run your ass down
*Chorus*
So have a good life, then die
I hope it hurts so much it makes you cry
I hope it's torturous and slow,
I hope you know your gonna go
Have a good life, then die
*Reprise*
Have a good life, then die
I hope it hurts so much it makes you cry
I hope it's torturous and slow,
I hope you know your gonna go
Have a good life, then die

Why I won't watch the news...
When I was growing up I knew that 6 o'clock meant local news and 6:30 meant National News ... without question. Before I was allowed a TV in my room (quite a young age) if I wanted to do something in the family room at 6, I did so as to not interrupt my Parents' watching of the news. Let me just say that I thought that interrupting them would bring down something wrathful, I just knew that they took it very seriously, and wanted to show some respect. Local news was often dull and uneventful, ("Aww did we miss the weather?") and the National News did little but show me just how messed up the world was. As I grew up I found that the 6 o'clock hour was also home to Seinfeld reruns, and syndicated Simpsons. When I did go to watch the news with my folks I would still be just as frustrated to upset by the state of the world. So....I don't watch the news any more. I don't read news papers (I will read them but I do not make a habit of it) I know that it is very ostrich-like of me, but at least I am not pissed off by 7.

3 Days Left
...Until 2007. Not a lot to report here.
Christmas was - as ever - an interesting matter.
6 Christmas celebrations (4 on Barb's Side, 1 on my side, 1 for just us)
I have 3 funny stories to tell about things that happened either on Christmas or just prior regarding my family. Unfortunately the inflection is what sells it and so I will not be attempting to journal them here. For the few people that read this please feel free to give me a call if you would like to hear them. For those of you who were at the Gowell Family Christmas this year, no explanation is necessary.
Barb's family's generosity continues to floor me. I didn't realize how different our lives growing up must have been.
Another bugbear is that I continue to feel like the dog who shit on the rug when I am with Barb's family for more than a short period. They all go to very huge lengths to make me feel welcome, but there is just something that I seem to fail to process about the situation and often get reserved, flustered, or depressed.
Work is going incredibly well. I have been blessed with a friendly work environment, interesting projects, and supportive management and colleagues.
Barb is as wonderful as ever. Always supportive, and really keeping me out of trouble. I love the woman and couldn't be happier.

1/4th of a Century
So I turn 25 today. It is hard to believe some times that I made it this far. My life has not been perfect, but with the strength and support of my family, friends, and a wonderful wife I am sure that it is only getting better. Thank you everyone.

Moving, Moving, Moved
I have moved into our new apartment, and am in the process of unpacking and picking the few things I have left at Mom and Dad's. Barb has moved a fair amount of stuff, but won't make the move proper until after the wedding.
The first maintenance call went off without a hitch and now everything is dang near perfect here. Apart from being alone that is. I start work at TechSmith on September 18th, so I have 2 full weeks to get my relaxing done, as well as getting settled in.

Movin' Right Along
Movin' right along in search of good times and good news,
With good friends, you can't lose,
This could become a habit.
Opportunity knocked once, let's reach out and grab it,
Together we'll nab it.
We'll hitch-hike, bus, or yellow cab it.
Movin' right along, foot-loose and fancy free.
Gettin' there is half the fun; come share it with me.
Movin' right along (doog-a-doon, doog-a-doon)
We'll learn to share the load.
We don't need a map to keep this show on the road.
Movin' right along we found a life on the highway,
And your way is my way, so trust my navigation.
California here we come, that pie-in-the-sky land.
Palm trees and warm sand, though sadly we just left Rhode Island.
Movin' right along, hey, L.A., where've you gone?
Send someone to fetch us, we're in Saskatchewan.
Movin' right along (doog-a-doon, doog-a-doon)
You take it, you know best.
Hey, I've never seen the sun come up in the West.
Movin' right along, we're truly birds of a feather,
We're in this together, and you know where you're goin'.
Movie stars with flashy cars and life with the top down.
We're stormin' the big town.
Yeah! Storm is right, should it be snowin'?
Movin' right along, do I see signs of men?
Yeah, "welcome" on the same post that says "come back again."
Movin' right along, foot-loose and fancy free.
You're ready for the big time, is it ready for me?
Movin' right along
Movin' right along
(repeat to fade)

The Good with the Bad
I went downtown Traverse City to hit up the Barber Shop today, but I ran into some problems:
- Had to park in the Parking Lot by the Park Place.
- Had to walk down to the Barber Shop a few blocks away.
- Barber Shop was closed.
- Had to cross a parade line to get back to my car.
- Had to pay $4 for event parking to get out of the deck (I was there about 15 minutes).
Being upset about the whole situation I went to Borders to kill some time:
- Had to wait for Border's to open (at 9).
Nothing to get overly upset about, but kind of annoying nonetheless.
As I was leaving Borders I saw a couple of older women playing a game on a table outside. This got my attention so I snuck a quick glance. It was Skip-Bo and they were really into it.
That kinda made my day. It is nice to see people in all walks, and times of life take time to relax and enjoy each other's company while playing a card game (or board game).
Though this still doesn't get me a hair cut.

My new sandwich.
1 Loaf French Bread cut into thirds on the bias.
Cut each third in half, giving two slices.
Remove the 'meat' of one half of the slices of bread.
In this channel, add these 3 meats.
1 serving Turkey (Smoked, or Honey Roasted. Dealer's Choice).
1 serving Ham (Smoked, or Honey)
1 serving Roast Beef
on the still intact half, spread about 1 1/2 tablespoons of Italian Dressing.
Cover dressing with 1 slice Provolone cheese, cut in half.
Inspired by Alton Brown and Jersey Giant

Just got back from another great weekend at Barb's.
Things I have learned:
1. Don't scare the hiccups out of Barb!
2. Always remember a hat and sunscreen.
3. Never leave after 5 on the Friday before July 4th.
4. Blokus + Boat = Nausea!
5. Always remember the Colby Jack.
6. Don't refer to Anne as 'Kiddo', even affectionately.
7. Khaki shorts > Jeans > Jean Shorts.
8. 90% people forget how to drive around July 4th.

... as we know it.
This is an "up" weekend. Heading to see my girl in Traverse City and spend an extra day thanks to Memorial Day. Barb turns 25 this weekend so I hope to take her out for a nice meal and spend the weekend doing fun stuff.
I can't believe the wedding is less than 5 months away. Barb and her family have really been kicking butt and my folks have been doing whatever they can. Barb and I go to our first Marriage Prep meeting next weekend ("another up weekend") and I am really looking forward to it. I think it is a good chance to learn, and if issues arise, bring them to attention and work to handle them. We have also been going through some marriage prep books and we have really learned a lot about each other. How we got where we are, and even what "where we are" is, emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually.
I am a very lucky man.

Another Wonderful Weekend
I just got back from another great weekend up at Barb's and I love her now more than ever. We had our share of frustrations and miscommunications this weekend, but everything is all straightened out, and the Wedding is still on as planned :).
When I take a step back and look at my life to this point, I have a lot of memories. Some more prominent than others, but quite a few nonetheless. I feel so very lucky that I get to have the rest of my life filled with memories of Barb and I together. I don't know what I would do without this beautiful, intelligent, and simply wonderful woman.

Well, I'm off to babysit the munchkins in a few minutes. Hopefully, it will all go as planned and the kids will go to bed easily and ON TIME, for once. I have to babysit for them on Saturday, as well. This next week I am responsible for watching my dad's dog, which means I have to go stay at his place. A whole block down the road... *sigh* Sammy better be well behaved.
I haven't really done anything useful today. I did a smidgen of homework, but that is about it. I have five more chapters to read and answer questions about and an exam due by the 17th. There is also a group project to be done, which may prove difficult for me.

Eels - I Like Birds
I can't look at the rocket launch
The trophy wives of the astronauts
And i won't listen to their words
'cause i like
Birds
I don't care for walking downtown
Crazy auto-car gonna mow me down
Look at all the people like cows in a herd
Well, i like
Birds
If you're small and on a search
I've got a feeder for you to perch on
I can't stand in line at the store
The mean little people are such a bore
But it's alright if you act like a turd
'cause i like
Birds
If you're small and on a search
I've got a feeder for you to perch on

...Continued
My good friend Andy raises some excellent points.
Well, you are not exactly in the same place as you were when you were three.Hell you aren't even in the same place as you were January 1st.
But if you are concerned about your actual residence, there are plenty of ways to rectify that. You just have to decide you really want to do it.
What follows is my response:
I don't know what to do with myself.
I concur, technically I am not in the same place as I was when I was three. But it feels like it some times. I rarely venture out of my bubble.
I also agree that technically I am not in the same place (spiritually, mentally, physically) that I was on Jan 1. And I am thankful for that as well. (As an aside, this is not meant as a slight; I believe now that my previous relationship was doomed to fail It was not a good arrangement for either party involved, if only now that we have seen was has happened since.)
I have no willpower, and little drive. I feel like what I would imagine a lost cause feels like. I have friends, I have support. But I am still a scared little boy. I have told a wonderful woman that I love her and she has reciprocated, and that I would love to have a life with her and she has reciprocated, but I have no idea how to make it happen. I am lazy, single-minded, stubborn and sycophantic. I am too lazy to even have faith.
That is why I feel like I am three. I am smart enough to understand that I am alive, but damned if I know how to do what I want to do next. And unfortunately, it is not anything that anyone can tell me.
----Additional----
Let me say that this post is regarding how I feel about making changes in my life. Not specific to any one facet of my life.

Febtober Already?
So, this year is almost over. I will say that it has been one of the most interesting years of my life. I have much to be thankful for.
1. My Family: There continuing support has been very helpful this year. Through good times and bad they are always there for me. Thanks guys!
2. My Friends: I am truly blessed to have friends that will always watch out for me, and help me through any problems I may have. Thank you everyone!
3. My Job: Though at times particularly stressful, I am very happy with where I work. The flexibility of my position combined with the family feel of our team provides a great work environment. I am very lucky.
last but certainly not least...
4. My Girl: Barb is quite simply the best thing that has ever happened to me. Her love, trust, and commitment is the anchor that I hold on to when it feels like I will be swept away by life. I love you Barb, thank you so much.

Dilemmetry
A word I have come up with to describe my current situation. I am in a dilemma due to my current geographic location. I would like nothing more than to keep my current job with MPHI, but I can't very well due that while living in Traverse City (with my girl). Unless something changes with the telecommuting allowance. I really want to talk to my boss about it, but I am very concerned that I will be shot down. VPNs + VoIP + Driving Down when meeting require it. I think it is doable, and I think other people have moved farther.
