This is not my beautiful job...
Email from a contractor gave me the opportunity to do a 3 year project with Microsoft if I wanted to code C++. Not my cup of tea really. I would love the opportunity to work for MS, but C++ is not my speciality. I have been getting a lot of calls and emails lately about contract positions. I am wondering if the industry is currently in a restructuring period or what. It seems that a lot of people are hiring old school programmers. Where are the web application developer jobs at? Or are those jobs filled by the old school programmers and that is why they need to be replaced?

Busy Busy Busy
Work is really going strong at the moment, and I wanted to show everybody what my desk looks like (when really busy), but unfortunately I don't have my digital camera here, so this will just have to tide you over.

I am not one to quote the bible...
So as you may well know, we have the Alpha Geek award at work that goes to the person who is the most geeky for that month. Well, I bought a hat from Thinkgeek.com and have been wearing it all day.
Someone came in to my office during the latter part of the day and asked to look at my hat, and then said "Scott, with that hat, 'we' have decided to name you the Omega geek", and me without thinking responded with, "I am the Alpha and the Omega", which in hindsight was a little over the top.
Now, I admit, I have never been a real religious person, and I have never read all of the Bible. But apparently during Revelations, this is something that God says a couple times. Now, I have heard this quote in other places *cough*Transformers: Beast Wars*cough*, but now I am kinda concerned that I might get smoten.

Another day, another doldrum
My work situation is still in flux. It looks like we might be down one programmer indefinately, though we might pick up our own IT person. This would cut down on my Network/Firewall/Backup/Server Administration tasks, but there will still be a learning curve for a while with the new person. The ad went out on Sunday and they expect to have interviews by next week.
2 tasks done today, Nice lunch with Andy and some CCS employees, got the paperwork settled for the reimbursement stuff for the cabling I have bought for work, and this week is a pay week.
Better than a kick in the teeth I guess.

Dissonance
Dictionary.com defines dissonance as "A harsh, disagreeable combination of sounds; discord."
I have my headphones on and I can still hear this DISSONANCE!

Belated Birthday Wishes!
Recieved the B-Day card at the office today, and hidden amongst the standard greetings were some that I found very interesting.
1. How old are you? Are you a Scorpio? That sign certainly is mysterious.
2. Can't let you have your birthday off next year, [I'll] take you to lunch.
3. geeks rock.
My responses in case anyone reads this:
1. 23. Yes. It certainly is.
2. Sounds good to me.
3. Yes, yes they do.

New Phone Books
"The new phone book's here. The new phone book's here. This is the kind of spontaneous publicity I need. My name in print. That really makes somebody. Things are going to start happening to me now." - The Jerk (1979)The new phonebook's have just arrived in my office. I had this strange compulsion to reenact that scene from "The Jerk". Probably a good thing I didn't.

Wow ... I smell a lawsuit
If I was a different person ... I could make a mint.
The question ....
Mon 3/29/2004 12:49 PMMy first response...Scott,
[Client] says that she is not getting email notifications from the [application]. Can you please check into this?
Mon 3/29/04 12:51 PMThe next response...
Did [client] specify in which sections were not emailing, or just not recieving any emails?
Mon 3/29/2004 12:54 PMAt this point I want to double check that the email address I was originally given is still her current email address.
Not receiving any emails at all.
Mon 3/29/2004 12:55 PMHer response ... out loud in fact .. so loud I can hear it in my office even though she meant to say it under her breath.
Just to doublecheck ... is [client's] email address [Email address as it appears in code]?
"Why the fuck didn't you doublecheck in the first place?"Then the followup email.
Mon 3/29/2004 12:56 PMMy response said in an effort to keep her from getting into trouble...
[Email address as it appears in the code]
Mon 3/29/2004 12:56 PMNow at this point, I thought I might hear a whoops, or something ... I mean everybody has a bad day, and I can't fault anyone for a slip of the tongue.
OK ... that is what I had. I will try and find out exactly what is going on.And by the way ... I can hear you in my office.
Scott
Her response.

RE: HTMLInputFile
When using the ASP.NET control HTMLInputFile (read <input type="file">), make sure to use both the name and id attributes in order to be able to parse the ".PostedFile.FileName". Also ... make sure your <form> tag has the attribute enctype="multipart/form-data" or the file upload won't work.
Sorry about the bolds. Just wanted to make an effect.

"Why can't you just do this?"
If anyone knows of a good ASP.NET control that has a textbox that is conditional on a checkboxlist or radiobuttonlist I would greatly appreciate it. I don't have the drive to write my own at the moment.

I thought I was wrong...
...but I guess I was mistaken.
Today just went from good to horrible. It only took one little email and now today is suddenly stressful and frustrating, and everything I didn't need. That's what I get for thinking these next 2 days might go over slow.

It's Working ... It's Working
Work finally took a turn for the best.
I finally fixed some db calls in one application that I have been working on fixing (the person I replaced left it unfinished).
Basically it involved making 3 calls in order to get all the correct records, but IT'S WORKING!

Once in a while I even suprise myself.
I finished the changes to my new project at work in record time, and after that I have been attempting to do some UI things for it, and after seeing a demo of a Javascript Mouseover menu I rewrote one, and it looks to be exactly what we needed for this project. I haven't had a lot of experience writing javascript stuff, so it was kinda cool. Next I have to do some weird iframe or hidden div thing. Eh, it's work, and it works.

What I am up to
Apart from passing 2 and a half bills. Work is going ... well ... it's going. Doing lots of different things. One site for some genetics stuff, working with absolute positioning of graphics .... new stuff for me. Another site for some child health data, just static pages right now but it is going well.

I can see down the dark hall
... and until today the door at the end of hall was closed. Today it opened, and I can now bask in the warm glow of the adjoining room's flourescent lighting.
I finally got paid today. Not a check, CASH MONEY. 3 paychecks all at once ... finally.

... Only Error Checking
I finished up the last 2 functions today for my HSFR System here at the City. My gut got the better of me because I didn't like the work slowdown (see previous entry for reasons behind that) I had imposed upon myself so I busted my butt to finish the last few things.
I sent it off to our contact in Human Services instructing him to break it in any way he can, and let me know what he thinks.
